On May 5, we organized a scientific seminar on “Comprehensive Analysis of Modern Cryptographic Schemes for Secured Process Control“. The scientific seminar was led by Matúš Furka, a PhD student at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The scientific seminar was organized in the framework of the FrontSeat project as part of the seminar series on “Research Seminar on Smart Cybernetics”.

Abstract:
The paper presents applications of homomorphic cryptographic schemes in process control. Homomorphic encryption is a particular type of encryption that allows performing mathematical operations over encrypted data. Therefore the user can use third-party services as controllers without revealing any vulnerable information, like process data. Considering homomorphic properties makes it possible to perform data aggregation or evaluate control actions without having specific knowledge about the process data. Our paper presents two fully homomorphic crypto schemes, namely BFV and CKKS cryptosystem. We briefly describe the cryptographic scheme and its main advantages and disadvantages for each. We also discuss the fields, where, and how to apply these algorithms. We present a case study involving the application LQ control strategy implemented in an encrypted setup. We compare each crypto-scheme’s benefits and cornerstones while providing a step-by-step guide for implementing encrypted process control.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon under grant no. 101079342 (Fostering Opportunities Towards Slovak Excellence in Advanced Control for Smart Industries).
